The car I'm driving, the car I'm changing oil this time, is a Toyota 70-type Land Cruiser HZJ75 that I've been driving since 2002.
A 1HZ, 4200cc diesel engine vehicle manufactured in 1991.
The more I ride, the better I feel.
I think there is no doubt that the engine oil exchange that has been done in the past is keeping the condition of the engine now.
Engine oil change is the most important maintenance to keep your car running smoothly for a long time.

Neglecting to do this will greatly shorten the life of your vehicle.
Frequency of engine oil change
In my case, I change the oil between 3000km and 5000km in terms of distance, judging from the degree of oil fatigue.
If it is a gasoline naturally aspirated engine, I think that there is no problem even if it is twice this distance.
Please refer to the manual.
If you do a lot of long-distance driving, the distance will increase to 5000km.
If there are many sprints and rough roads, the distance will be reduced to about 3000km.
Also, the mileage will change depending on the type of oil.
It feels almost proportional to the running time of the engine.
According to the Land Cruiser manual, the engine oil should be changed every 5000km.
It is every 2500km in the following severe environments.

My home in Nairobi is at an altitude of 1800m, so it's already in a harsh environment.
If you go west from Nairobi, there are many passes over 2500m.
And dirt roads and bad roads in national parks.
There are also many short-distance runs, such as picking up children from school.
So, it seems that the usage situation of the author's car is close to the harsh environment.

It is recommended to change the engine oil as soon as possible if the engine starts to vibrate or make noise, or if the engine oil starts to decrease quickly.

In my experience, the best engine oil for this 1HZ diesel engine is
15W-40 multi-grade mineral oil.

I used to use single grade SAE 40 oil, but after trying many things, 15W-40 engine oil is the best engine oil in terms of quietness, power and cooling.
By the way, the 10W-30 was too soft, but the vibration increased and the engine performance was not good.
The oil that is specified for recent engines that emphasize fuel efficiency is very runny, but if the mileage has increased, it may be better to increase the viscosity a little.
I recommend that you try it yourself.
How to judge oil settling
It's just the way I do it.
From these symptoms, the engine oil change is performed early or delayed.
Engine oil feels smooth to the touch and new oil feels smooth to the touch.

Preparation for engine oil change
There is nothing particularly difficult except that your hands get a little dirty.
Prepare the necessary items before starting work.
The amount of oil required for 1HZ engine oil change is 9.3 liters on the manual for oil filter replacement.

Bucket: to receive old engine oil
Large plastic bag (garbage bag): To cover the bucket to keep it from getting dirty
Mat: To lay it under the car so that it doesn't get dirty even if you lie down
Funnel: For putting new engine oil into the engine and transferring the old engine oil to the plastic tank
Newspaper: to wipe off the oil
Tissue: For wiping old engine oil from the oil filter receiver
Gloves: Use if you don't want your hands to get dirty
One run to soften the engine oil
First of all, warm up and warm up the engine before pulling out the engine oil.
The lower the viscosity, the easier it is for the oil to come out.
In order to thoroughly remove the oil, in my case, I spend the night to remove the oil.
You probably don't need to go that far, but in my case, it's a world of commitment.
So, I will do it after finishing all the running of the day.
If it is just after running, it will start working as it is.
Engine oil change 10 steps
In 10 steps, I will introduce how to change the oil that I am doing.
1. Confirm that the oil filler cap is loose
Check that the oil filler cap is loose.
If the engine oil is removed even though it is not loosened, it will not be able to run.
It is unlikely that the filler cap will loosen, but check that the oil can be put in in order.
Do not remove the filler cap yet.
After confirming that it is loosened, lightly tighten it.
This is to suppress the momentum of oil coming out even a little when the drain cock is removed.
2. Slightly loosen the oil filter

To make sure the oil filter can be removed before draining the oil, loosen it until it moves by hand.
If you remove it here, the oil will come out, so be careful.
Just loosen it up a bit.
Instead of an oil filter spanner, a special hemp string and a 14-15mm ring spanner are used.
As shown in the picture, pass the hemp string tied to the ring spanner, apply one side to the oil filter, and loosen it with the principle of leverage.
Soaking the hemp string in water will prevent it from slipping.
This hemp string is tied and sold in Kenya to loosen various things.
It is a substitute that can be used in various ways.
A small ring is tied on one side.
However, I haven't met a mechanic who has mastered this yet.
By loosening the oil filter here, you can confirm that the oil filter can be replaced reliably, and the work after that will be smoother.
3. Put a plastic bag in a bucket, place it under the engine drain cock, and remove the drain cock.
Lining the bucket with a plastic bag will keep the bucket from getting oily.
In the case of Rankle, the vehicle height is high, so a bucket can be installed under the engine without using a jack.
If you're working on a regular car, you'll need to secure it with jack stands to create space under the car.
*Working with a jack is dangerous.
If you have any doubts, leave the work to the experts.
It's safe if it's top notch.
Loosen the drain cock with a 14mm ring spanner, and when it is loose, turn it slowly by hand.

Tips for not getting your hands dirty
When loosening the drain cock by hand, turn it while lightly pressing it against the oil pan.
Since it is pressed against the oil pan, the oil will not come out even if the threads are finished.
You can tell the end of the screw thread by a feeling of idle rotation.
Pinch the drain cock with your fingertips, point it in an easy-to-pull direction, and quickly pull out the cock.
Pull out at an angle so that the side opposite your hand opens first so that the engine oil flow path is on the opposite side of your hand.
Be careful not to turn it upside down.
It's hard when it splatters on your face.
The trick is to remove it without hesitation.
In the photo above, I'm not wearing gloves, but my fingertips only need to get a little oily.
While doing it many times, you will get the hang of it and you will be able to work without getting your hands dirty.
Be careful not to drop the drain cock.
Adjust the position of the bucket so that the oil does not spill.
If you pull it out overnight, the wind will blow the oil away.
It is recommended to carefully adjust the position of the bucket.
After adjusting the bucket position, remove the filler cap.
4, remove the oil filter
Wait for a while until the oil is fully drained.
If you remove the oil filter without waiting here, a lot of oil will splatter.
Since it will be left overnight, cover it with a plastic bag or the like to prevent dust and dirt from entering.
Lightly close the filler cap.
It feels like only air enters without dust.
5.Leave it overnight to remove as much old oil as possible from the engine.
Drain cock and 14mm ring spanner
In most cases, the old oil is still dripping down little by little even the next morning after leaving it overnight.
Wipe off the oil from the drain cock and store it with the 14mm ring spanner for easy identification.
Close the hood, and if you are outdoors, be sure to protect against rain.
6. Wipe off the dirt on the oil filter receiver.
Before installing the oil filter, use a soft cloth or tissue to wipe off the old oil.
7, Tighten the drain cock
The tightening torque of the drain cock is 27Nm.
Be careful not to overtighten.
I have not used the engine oil drain cock gasket so far, but no leaks have occurred.
The felt of the drain cock seems to be a good gasket.
However, it is recommended to install a new gasket each time to ensure that there are no leaks.
In the case of parts using aluminum materials, be careful not to overtighten.
Check the tightening torque manually and use a torque wrench to ensure the work.
8, Install a new oil filter
Use your finger to lubricate the gasket with new engine oil before installing.
If you use a cloth or the like, the fibers may stick together and cause the oil to leak, so it is safest to apply with your bare hands.
At this time, it is recommended to check the feel of the oil and remember it.
Tighten the oil filter with your bare hands, not with a wrench.
After the gasket touches the engine, the fixed position is 3/4 turn.
Be careful not to overtighten the rubber gasket, as overtightening can also cause leakage.
The manual says to change the engine oil, once every two times, and the oil filter, but I change it every time.
This is because a considerable amount of old engine oil remains in the oil filter.
9, pour engine oil
Easy to pour using a funnel.
Pour in at once so as not to spill until it approaches the specified amount.
The specified amount of engine oil for this car is 9.3 liters, so add up to about 8.5 liters at once.
From there, pour engine oil little by little while checking the dipstick frequently.
When you start the engine, the oil filter is filled with oil, so add a little more and start the engine.
Start the engine, run it for about 3 minutes, and check that there is no engine oil leakage from the drain cock or oil filter gasket.
Finally, add the engine oil little by little and repeat the measurement, being careful not to add too much.
Now that the car is ready to run, close the filler cap tightly.
Do not overtighten as it will be difficult to remove.
10, After running for a while, check the amount of engine oil again
After running for a while, measure again and confirm that the amount of engine oil is appropriate.
After running for a while, there are many things that "the amount of engine oil was still low!"
In the case of the author's car, the best condition is when the amount of engine oil is just below the F mark on the dipstick.
At the middle position, the noise is a little louder.
The author uses a funnel to put the used engine oil into an empty plastic tank.
In Kenya, there is a demand for used engine oil to keep termites out of wooden buildings, so there is no problem in disposing of it.
When working in Japan, it is a good idea to use an oil disposal pack.
Some local governments do not allow dumping, so be careful.
In fact, before you change your car's engine oil, make sure you know how to dispose of the old engine oil.
