Repair of starter motor LandCruiser HZJ75 1HZ Engine

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

Land Cruiser's starter motor that caused a malfunction

This time about repair and maintenance of my car Land Cruiser.

Every time I repair or maintain my car, but not every time, I take pictures to remind myself of the repair situation.

When my hands are covered with oil or grease, my daughter and son help me take pictures.

First of all, when I looked for the car repair and maintenance photos I took earlier, I first noticed the starter repair, no matter what I covered in the article.

This time, I will take up the repair of this starter motor.

If you want to repair the car yourself, I would appreciate it if you could use it as a reference.

This repair was done in May 2016.

First, to briefly explain the mechanism of the starter motor,

At the same time as turning the starter key, a small gear that transmits the power of the motor pops out by the solenoid switch, which is connected to a large and heavy disk, a flywheel, the motor rotates, powerful torque is transmitted to the engine, and the engine starts. ..

When you release the starter key, the gear that transmitted the rotation of the motor to the flywheel is pulled back to its original position, and the rotation of the starter motor also stops.

The engine continues to rotate and the car can run. This is a normal engine start.

It is the solenoid switch that pulls out and retracts this small gear.

What happened to my car

What happened to my car's symptoms? One day, when I suddenly started the car engine, I noticed an unusual noise.

When I traced the source of the abnormal noise, I found that the starter motor was still spinning.

I started, but even if I returned the key after that, the motor did not stop.

For the time being, when I tried disconnecting the battery connection while the engine was running, the motor stopped rotating and the gear connection was also disconnected.

I reconnected the battery, and for the time being, this was the way to go.

From this symptom, it was speculated that the solenoid switch of the starter motor had gone wrong.

I decided to remove the starter motor immediately, connect it to the battery at home and test it.

The cause was still the solenoid switch.

Even if the switch is turned off, the magnetic force seems to be insufficient, and the gear is not pulled in and the motor remains rotating. When the power was completely turned off, the motor stopped and the gear was pulled in at the same time.

First, let's separate the solenoid from the motor.

I thought it would be easy to get rid of it, but the Phillips screw that secures this solenoid switch was not something that could be easily removed.

Hard for Hijo! Too hard!

The screwdriver I had was a little small, and there was no doubt that the mountain would collapse if I put a lot of effort into it, so I first procured a screwdriver.

The screwdriver I bought first didn't seem to be very good, and although the size fits perfectly with the screwdriver, when I put a lot of effort into it, the screwdriver was crushed rather than the screwdriver.

It's a tight tightening that can't be straightforward.

Purchased set

I only need a Phillips screwdriver, but I can only buy it as a set, so I told myself "I have another time!" And bought it.

By the way, I searched for a loan from a nearby garage, but I couldn't find one.

Shopping for about 2000 yen.

I wondered if it was a good exercise to run more than 10 kilometers by cycling back and forth between the house and the store.

Finally I was able to loosen the screw

Using the screwdriver and pipe wrench I purchased, I finally succeeded in getting rid of it.

At the moment when something that didn't move until now moves, it seems that he has captured something, saying, "I'll move on!"

This is also one of the real pleasures of repair.

I thought about winding the solenoid coil myself, but it's too deep to wind it myself.

I give up because I have no choice but to buy new or used parts.

Immediately go to Kirinaga Street to procure parts.

A little down from the center of Nairobi, Kirinaga Street is lined with shops selling car-related parts on both sides of the road and around it.

You can get most of the Land Cruiser parts here, genuine, fake, used, and new, at a fairly low price.

First of all, I have no intention of buying it, but for reference, when I asked the price of the starter motor full set, it was 35,000 shillings, about 40,000 yen in Japanese yen, which is a little too expensive.

Assembly, a solenoid switch that I finally found after walking around Kirinaga Street.

The price is 3500 shillings.

I was able to purchase it for about half the expected price.

"I confirmed that it was for 12 volts, it's not 24 volts, so it's okay."

I took it home and assembled it.

Since it has a complicated shape, I was worried whether it would actually mesh well with the motor part,

Needless to say, the solenoid assembly got stuck.

"It's time to assemble!"

This is the most enjoyable time to repair. My wife often gets angry because time goes by and I forget everything else and devote myself to my work.

I remember the days when I used to play RC cars when I was a boy.

I was quite enthusiastic about it, so I made some RC cars and ran them to play. His favorite car was the Kyosho Co., Ltd. Optima, a chain-driven 4WD car. I remember the days when I was a kid who enjoyed various modifications.

You can change the motor, change the damper oil to hard, soft, medium and depending on the situation, and adjust the camber angle, toe angle, stabilizer tension, and differential viscosity. I learned a lot about how cars work while playing with radio-controlled models.

It doesn't matter, but Optima is the same with some toe-ins, and Land Cruiser is the same with some toe-ins. I already knew from the experience of radio control that a slight toe-in would improve straightness.

I often think that "cars are big, but the basics are the same", but the opposite is true, just imitating an actual car and making a model.

Operation test of the assembled motor

You need to be very careful when handling the cable. The battery is also powerful, so if you short it, the cable film will melt in an instant with a strong spark.

Simply connect the tip of the red cable extending from the battery at the bottom left of the photo to the terminal of the black cable protruding from the right-hand starter motor.

At the moment of operation, a tremendous rotational twisting force is generated, so it is necessary to firmly hold down the motor, and it is also necessary to firmly connect the cable so that it will not come off due to vibration or the like.

It would be difficult if a short circuit occurs while the motor is rotating.

In the test, if the gear pops out and the motor turns at the moment of connection, it is OK.

And it is perfect if the gear retracts and the motor stops at the moment of disconnection.

Never mind, connect the cable.

"Guyin !!!" It is a rotation with a tremendous torque. For the time being, take a break.

I wonder if it takes so much power to start a 6-cylinder 4.2-liter engine.

That should be the case, and I remember having a hard time because it took a tremendous amount of force to manually rotate the engine to a predetermined position such as a predetermined TDP by adjusting the valve clearance of the cylinder head.

This heavy crank is easily rotated by this motor.

It's only 12 volts, and I think it's a little overwhelming.

The car has a very blunt plus cable, which is the shortest distance from the battery to the starter motor.

At the very least, if it's 24 volts, I'm wondering if it's so unreasonable.

Wiring can also be thin.

When I disconnected the terminals, the motor stopped and the new solenoid worked properly.

It was confirmed that both the starter motor and the solenoid operated smoothly without any problems.

All that remains is to attach it to the car.

Only one bolt, one nut, and wiring connection can be attached to the car.

A clean engine room with almost no electrical equipment, easy to install.

The installation was completed successfully.

When I turned the starter key, the starter motor turned powerfully and the engine started working safely.

The repair is completed successfully.
