Lake Turkana Kenya

A long time ago, I traveled around Lake Turkana in northern Kenya on a tour.

Since there is an article at that time, I will introduce the link.

Please take a look if you like.

Lake Turkana, which I finally saw after overcoming a long rough road on the second day after leaving Nairobi

A long time ago, in 2001, I traveled to Lake Turkana on a local tour.

Her memory has faded, but I'll try to write a little while remembering it.

Please refer to the link for details.

Lake Turkana is located in northern Kenya, close to Ethiopia.

The surrounding area is dry and very hot, and the Charbi Desert extends to the east.

The area around Lake Turkana is hot and windy, with low altitude and poor greenery.

Due to the temperature difference between the land, which heats up rapidly during the day and cools down at night, and the lake, where the temperature does not change much, strong sea breeze and land breeze are blowing on a daily basis.

The wind manages to overcome the heat, but the breeze that blows at night shakes the palm trees like raging and is very noisy.

When the direction changes from sea breeze to land breeze, I'm grateful that it's been quiet for a while, but this time the sweltering heat strikes.

The main source of water for Lake Turkana is the Omo River, which flows from Ethiopia, but there is no river where water flows out.

Therefore, the water only evaporates, and the minerals carried from the river over many years are concentrated and the water quality is alkaline.

It's alkaline, but it's still drinkable, but when I try it, it's very bad water that I don't feel like drinking.

Even if I drink it, things don't get moisturized.

Is it like drinking unscented soapy water?

There are no regular flights,

If you go by land, it takes two days to get there after leaving Nairobi.

Most of the process on the second day is unpaved and there are rough roads, so a four-wheel drive vehicle such as Land Cruiser is essential.

There is no stand on the way, so if you don't prepare for food, water, spare parts for the car, etc., you will be hurt.

I cross several rivers on the way, but there is no problem because the water does not normally flow, but once it falls, it is difficult.

You will get stuck crossing the river.

Of course, there shouldn't be a bridge, and you have to be prepared to take days to wait for the river to drain.

I sometimes hear stories of cars being washed away in an attempt to cross the river.

The road is dry, but there are plenty of elephant herds, wild animals such as Orix, and wild birds, so you won't get bored.

We often see Rhinoceros chinensis, which is not found in Nairobi.

The farther away you are from the town and the farther away you are from the people, the more exciting and exciting you feel.

At that time, I moved by Land Rover 101, which is a rare 4x4.

It doesn't speed up, but it's tall, open and has a good view, and it's very strong on rough roads.

Around the lake, there live pastoral tribes such as the Turkana and Samburu.

The El Molo ethnic minority, who live by catching fish on the shores of the lake, live in it.

Nowadays, mixed races are progressing, and it is said that there are hundreds to hundreds of people with pure pedigree, and the population is so small that the future is in jeopardy.

El Molo settlement

What is the El Molo boy looking at in the dry land as far as the eye can see?

He only went to Lake Turkana twice.

The second time I went as a driver myself with a used Land Cruiser that I had just bought for shooting a commercial from Japan.

It's been about 15 years since I last visited Lake Turkana.

I would like to see with my own eyes what it is like now after a long time.

So far for the time being.

If I come up with something, I will add it.
