This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggles of little grebes in Inokashira Park in 2017.
Originally there were 6 chicks, but now only 1 chick.
The next day she visited the scene again.
Fortunately, the one chick left behind had safely spent the night.
The parent bird tried to reinforce the nest, but the submerged nest was hardly repaired.
It's not raining, but the chicks aren't always able to dry their stomachs in the water.
Put it in the middle! But I just can't climb
Perhaps because her body is cold, the chicks aren't very energetic.
I try to climb the back of my parent bird, but I just can't.
The feathers get wet gradually.
I managed to dig into the wings of the parent bird with only my head and chest.
It looks like it will be a little warmer.
You can eat food! I am hungry!
I have the physical strength to eat food, so if I can dry my body, I'll be fine.
While waiting for the parent bird, the chick shakes in the cold.
The body also sinks little by little.
Will it be the second dance of the chick who died yesterday?
A parent bird that gradually loses interest in chicks
The parent bird seems to be gradually losing interest in the chicks left behind.
You may have noticed that this child does not have the physical strength to grow up.
Still, Hina desperately keeps screaming, "Pyo, Pyo, Pyo!", And keeps up with her father and mother.
Hina left alone
The chick left behind keeps screaming as much as she can.
Her parents are close to each other, less than 20 meters away.
She should be able to hear the child calling, but she doesn't seem to come back.
The chicks don't even have the strength to swim to where her parent bird is.
Even when the sun went down and the area was pitch black, the chicks kept crying as long as they could speak.
All the chicks are dead
Unfortunately, all six chicks originally died.
The remaining chicks tried their best to live to the very end.
There may be circumstances in which the parent bird cannot be bitten by the chicks who have no physical strength to grow up.
If you don't hurry and prepare for your next parenting, it will run through the seasons and the next breeding will be difficult.
Through observing the parents and children of this little grebe, I was able to feel the rigor of living in the wild.
