This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.
The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.
Will the eggs hatch soon? Benten Pond, June 8th
■
Following the chicks in the Aquatic Life House, considering the order in which the eggs were laid, the eggs in Benten Pond will hatch next.
I saw two eggs here on May 22nd, so the first eggs were laid around May 20th.
Is the first egg hatching on Sunday, June 10th?
The leaves of the trees, which were thick enough to cover the face of the little grebe, had disappeared cleanly.
It seems that it was used as a material for the nest.
The part of the nest was cut out like a picture frame.
I used to have enough leaves to hide the nest, so I couldn't see it well, so I'm grateful for observing it.
Even for little grebes, the fact that the view around the nest is obstructed may be uncomfortable due to the discovery of foreign enemies and the delay in responding.
Is it because the leaves hanging from the tree are intended to be effective as a cover because the leaves are peeled off only around the nest?
Or maybe while I was incubating in the nest, I just plucked it and used it as a nest material without thinking "I can use this!".
Only the little grebe knows.
The egg is light brownish. Will it be born soon? June 8
The nest is well reinforced and seems to be okay in the event of a typhoon.
However, since this tree is overgrown with leaves, it will be shaken greatly by heavy rain and strong winds, so I am a little worried.
Expect the branches that hold the nest to be supple.
In the photo above, it is hard to see because it is hidden behind the leaves, but you can see that the eggs have a light brown color.
The last egg that hatched in the Aquatic Life House was light brownish before it hatched.
Will the eggs be lightly colored before they hatch?
It's the second time I've seen an egg turn brown if it hatches safely, and that's right.
Freshly laid eggs are pure white, May 22
The eggs when they were just laid were so white.
However, when the chicks hatched, I saw white egg shells, so it seems that not all of them will turn brown.
What happened to the gourd bridge nest?
Since then, the nest has been reinforced with materials other than aquatic plants on June 8th.
The nest was a little worried because it was full of aquatic plants, but it was reinforced with leaves.
I'm sure I learned from my mistakes.
The nest is well above the surface of the water and you don't have to worry about getting the eggs wet.
However, like the nest that was washed away last time, I'm worried about fixing it to a tree branch.
I hope that the eggs will not be washed away safely.
