This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.
The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.
Two chicks were born in the gourd pond. June 17

June 17 Two chicks hatched in the gourd pond.
There are still two eggs left on the nest, all of which are likely to hatch on June 19.
Originally, eggs were supposed to hatch first in Inokashira Park, but the first nest of this gourd family collapsed just before the eggs hatched, and we had to start over.
Still, without giving up, I made a new nest and finally reached this point.
But the real test is yet to come.
What about the Nanai Bridge family, which is hidden behind the reeds and can hardly be seen?
The figure of a chick in the shadow of a reed on the left in the center June 17
The Nanai Bridge family, which I didn't observe much because I could hardly see it because it was hidden behind the reeds and cattails.
The eggs were laid on almost the same day as the gourd pond family, and it was about time for the eggs to hatch.
When I squint, I see a small orange beak that moves over the nest.
The chicks were hatching here as well!
I can only see one, but how many are hatching?
What about the chicks behind the Aquatic Life House?
Behind the aquatic life house, which was lively with five chicks, is now quietly quiet
I can't find any chicks in the Aquatic Life House.
Did the parent bird completely abandon the chicks?
What is the cause?
Because there wasn't enough food?
Because the nest has broken?
Attack of foreign enemies such as snakes, crows and soft-shelled turtles?
Is it a couple?
In any case, the parent birds seem to have separated and cannot be seen in pairs.
Last year's Bentenike pair began preparing for the next nest soon after the six chicks had been wiped out.
It didn't go well again and again, but I was always in a relationship and the couple was very good.
No such behavior is seen here.
I wonder if the couple had a bad relationship.
It may have begun nesting again somewhere, but no one seems to have seen such behavior.
I hope you will try again somewhere.
Now in mid-June, there should still be a chance.

A story I heard from a person who witnessed the scene after a long time
I heard that the aquatic life house family lost the turf war with their neighbor Nanaibashi family, and the children were also relentlessly attacked and killed.
