"Little Grebe Parenting, Sequel" Part 21, Foreign Enemy

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.

The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.

The gourd pond family, the third chick is born. There are still shells in the nest. June 18

This time, we will focus on the Gourd Pond Family and the Nanai Bridge Family.

The gourd pond family, the third chick was born safely on June 18th.

Only one egg remains.

It should hatch soon, but "Hey, haven't you hatched yet?" June 19th

I thought that the 4th bird would hatch on June 19, but it seems that it did not hatch on that day.

The weather is downhill.

On June 20, I heard that the eggs were swallowed by the rat snake without hatching.

It's a shame.

The caretaker is not observing.

The three chicks are growing safely.

The chicks are growing safely, but the parent birds are more vigilant than usual June 22

Parent birds often put chicks in their wings, probably because snakes are wandering nearby.

The chicks are fairly safe if they are hidden in the feathers of their parents.

If there are eggs or chicks, foreign enemies will approach them aiming at them.

In this gourd pond, rat snakes often passed near the nest.

It wasn't just passing by, it was probably listening to the eggs and chicks.

Once the snake appears, the little grebe squints and stares at the snake's movements.

It's hard if you lose sight of it.

Little Grebe was wary of snakes, but it seems that snakes were better.

It means that the snake stopped one egg.

Great cormorants often come near the nest.

It approaches casually, but the aim is visible, and it is a small grebe chick.

The parent bird mercilessly drives out the invader's great cormorant.

The great cormorant is much larger than the little grebe, but when it is attacked by the little grebe, it runs away at a glance.

I wonder if I'm small

The attack of the little grebe will be so intense.

And the red-eared slider.

Although the number has decreased since the time of the storm, it is still quite common.

Put your face on the surface of the water, check the location of the nest, and casually approach and pass by.

Turn around and repeat this.

Hina may be looking for a chance to show a chance here as well.

Snakes are especially disliked by little grebe parents.

Snakes hide everywhere with a small gap.

And you can stay still for hours.

The little grebe parent remains tense until it sees the snake leave.

By the way, what about the Nanai Bridge family?

Four chicks were hatching! Nanai Bridge Family June 22

The Nanai Bridge family is hard to see due to cattails and reeds.

On June 22, I managed to confirm that there were four chicks in the gap between the reeds.

Parent birds dive in and out of the nest so that foreign enemies do not know the location of the nest.

Even if humans see it, it is difficult to understand.

How many foreign enemies have revealed the existence of this nest now?

Unexpectedly everyone knew.
