"Little Grebe Parenting, Sequel" Part 22, Moving Home

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.

The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.

The Bentenike family who moved, one chick has decreased. June 22

The little grebe from Benten Pond, which I introduced last time that I couldn't return to the nest.

The next day, on June 22, I was away from where I was.

And, unfortunately, one chick was gone during the night.

The place chosen to build a new nest is after passing through Benten Bridge.

About 100 meters away from the original nest.

Perhaps the original place felt the gaze of a foreign enemy, or it was uncomfortable to raise chicks.

In addition, one chick has been killed.

Did you do it a snake? Or is it a night heron? I don't really know what it is.

It seems that the Benten family moved to a new location because they raised their chicks safely.

There is a guy on the nest that I used to have! Mississippi Red-eared Slider June 25

A few days later, when I went to Benten, a red-eared slider was basking in the sun with my own face in the original nest.

Maybe this turtle was the cause of the move?

Last year, I saw a gourd bridge chick being killed by a red-eared slider.

The chicks that were eaten were about this size, and that's quite possible.

The chicks are surrounded by things that aim for their lives everywhere.

I think I did it to protect the lives of the chicks because they moved and other chicks would be killed as they were.

Certainly the former nest location was a restless place.

Now, what about the new address?

This is the same place where I built the nest last year, and I am building the nest again. Will you bring chicks? Twice

I was building a nest in the same place as last year, near Benten Bridge.

There were 6 chicks last year, but all of them did not grow and the nest was abandoned.

I wonder if we should raise chicks in this nest?

The material of the nest is only aquatic plants, and the buoyancy is insufficient.

I remember the cold rain that killed the chicks.

Such a nest will sink as soon as it rains.

Even after looking at it for a while, there is no sign of bringing chicks to this nest.

What is the reason?

In the middle of the pond, set up a simple nest in another place, and the chicks are there. June 25

In addition, this time I built a nest in the middle of the pond.

Do you intend to raise the chicks there?

Even so, it's a nest of aquatic plants.

It seems that it is hooked on a stake in the water, but with this, it will be washed away even if the water level rises a little.

THey started mating even though I had chicks. June 25

And the parent bird started mating despite the presence of chicks.

Well, what does this mean?

Are you going to abandon the chicks you have now?

Or are you planning to incubate while raising chicks?

I'm worried about future trends.

to be continued
