"Little Grebe Parenting, Sequel'' Part 23, Nest that has been washed away

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.

The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.

Gourd bridge family Something is restless. What's wrong? June 28

On June 28th, the gourd bridge family looks strange.

Something seems calm.

The parent bird takes out the chick and swims around the middle of the pond.

It seems that he cares more about the nest.

Did it even come out as a snake?

"Oh? There's no nest!", I can't repair it even if I try to repair it. June 28

The parent bird has returned in the direction of the nest.

Did you come to repair the nest?

The nest should be around here.

That? There is no nest!

What's wrong?

The wind has been strong for the past few days, so I wonder if the nest has been washed away.

Last time, a parent bird that had the experience of having its nest washed away with an egg just before hatching.

Even so, it is a little grebe with no nest luck.

The parent bird goes to repair the nest, but there is no nest there.

For the time being, I gently placed the aquatic plants of the nest material in the place where the nest was originally.

The nest material sank in vain.

But where is the nest?

there were! After all it was washed away. June 28

As soon as I looked around, I found the nest.

It's just around the corner.

The shape still remains, and it looks like it can still be used.

Will I still use this nest?

The nest was swept to the right from where the tree on the left was in contact with the water

I hear that the nest was in its original place until a few hours ago.

The "nest spill incident" has happened in the last few hours.

It's a place that is likely to be attacked by snakes, but will I sleep in this washed-out nest tonight?

Even so, I'm glad that the chicks were growing until they could swim.

It's about to become the second dance of the first nest.

I wonder if this parent bird, the fixed knot on the tree branch of the nest lumber, is a crap to commit the same blunder again.

In the evening, the parent bird came to the nest that was swept away with the chicks

At sunset, the parent bird came to the shed nest with the chicks.

"The nest is sturdy and looks okay!"

It is covered with aquatic plants, but many dead leaves are also used inside.

After confirming the scaffolding, the parent bird called the chicks to the nest.

Put the chicks in their wings and go to bed in a position to escape at any time

The place where the nest has been washed away is near the shore.

If there is an invasion of snakes, there is not much room to escape.

Therefore, if such a thing happens, the parent bird must take the chicks and escape immediately.

The parent bird puts the chicks into the feathers.

Go to bed in a position to escape immediately when attacked.

It's going to be a sleepless night for the parents. The eyes are wide open

Gradually, the area became dim.

You have to dawn on an unfixed nest.

It's going to be a sleepless night for the parents.

Where is the nest floating tomorrow morning?

to be continued
