This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park Tokyo Japan in 2018.
The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.
Female going out to catch food for chicks June 28
■
The Nanai Bridge family has succeeded in hatching four chicks.
There seems to be a crisis.
A scalpel with eyes as a point, what appeared in front?
The next crisis that came to the Nanai Bridge family was not a foreign enemy, but a neighbor's little grebe.
The neighbor is a little grebe who returned five chicks behind the Aquatic Life House.
At Inokashira Park, we succeeded in hatching chicks for the first time this year.
For unknown reasons, five chicks have been abandoned.
Since abandoning the chicks, the two have often been wandering near the boat landing on the east side of Nanai Bridge.
It seems that they are trying to build a nest around it, but it seems that they cannot find a good place.
It seems that the couple are not so close to each other that they are not willing to work together to build a nest.
The male is giving a little bit to the female of the Nanai Bridge family here.
This female also seems to be interested in the male.
In the photo above, the female parent (estimated) of the Nanai Bridge family went to the bridge in search of prey.
From the appearance of this female swimming slowly without diving, it seems that the purpose is to meet the male of the former aquatic life house.
As I was fidgeting and swimming on the surface of the water, the male appeared in front of me.
It may have appeared directly in front of the female of Nanai Bridge from the water aiming at the male.
When the male appeared, the female's facial expression changed in an instant.
Her eyes became dots and the red part of her cheeks swelled.
The red part of her cheek, when excited, seems to inflate her wings upside down like a Japanese crane.
I wonder if I'm going to fight, but they seem to be playing with each other.
If you are being chased, tilt your head while looking at the chase.
Do you make the red part of your cheeks visible?
It seems that the one who is chasing is a female, and the one who is chased is a male intruder.
Finally, they screamed at each other. The back is a female of Nanai Bridge.
After chasing after a while and having a play like this
We screamed at the end.
"Calillalyalaryalya ..."
All the while, the intruder's partner, Female, kept calling males from her boat landing.
The male Nanai Bridge did not seem to be aware of that.
The male neighbor who always won during the turf war.
It looks stronger than my husband.
Nanai Bridge female, do you find it attractive?
Strong genes are inherited from strong parents and weak genes are inherited from weak parents to their offspring.
The chicks that will be born from now on have never been strong.
The male partner may have been dissatisfied with the female who is not very good at raising children.
This may have been the cause of the abandonment of the five chicks last time.
By the way, will the four chicks be safely raised by their parents after this?
I'm a little worried.
The next day, the chicks on Nanai Bridge seem to be getting food, but only one is taking care of them.
Where has the other parent gone?
It seems that there was some crisis, the parent bird that protects the chicks June 29
It seems that the male is protecting the chicks.
The two chicks are piggybacked, and the two chicks that are not piggybacked snuggle up to their parents.
I'm wary of something.
What I'm wary of is the branches of a tree that has fallen nearby due to strong winds.
It made a loud noise and splashed and fell to the surface of the water.
Everyone was surprised and became a mass.
The four chicks try their best to catch the wind and waves to catch up with the parent bird that goes ahead. June 29
After a while, when I confirmed that the danger had passed, the parent bird left the chick and went somewhere.
"Wait!" The parent bird ignores the voices of the chicks and goes on and on.
The chicks swim hard, but the wind and waves are so strong that they can't move forward.
Where has the parent bird gone?
It's a big swell for chicks, and it's hard to see the parent birds that have gone far away. June 29
It was very windy this day.
The wind creates big waves in the pond.
Even this kind of wave is a very big wave for chicks.
It looks like a big swell.
The visibility doesn't work, and it seems that you can't see far.
For a long time, the parent bird leaves the chicks alone.
Are you alright?
I'm worried because I'm likely to be hit by a foreign enemy.
The tired chicks were washed away, and we arrived in the middle of the pond on June 29th.
The wind is strong and the surface of the water in the pond slowly swirls.
The exhausted chicks arrived in the middle of the pond, being washed away.
A large amount of aquatic plants and garbage are also gathered there.
It is a dangerous place where foreign enemy turtles may be lurking.
After a while, the parent bird arrived and the chicks were rescued safely.
This time, the chick escaped the difficulty, but this is not the case every time.
Luck is also an important factor in living, but it seems that we were very lucky this time.
Looking at this, we can see why most of the bird companions are monogamous.
A chick that needs a large amount of food to grow.
Without the cooperation of the couple, the chicks will not be able to feed enough and will not be protected from the danger of foreign enemies.
The affair of the parent bird is directly linked to the death of the chick.
It will be easily weeded out.
Mammals, many promiscuity.
The way of life seems to be completely different from that of birds.
