This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park Tokyo Japan in 2018.
The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.
In the latter half of August, each individual acts independently and freely, Ochanomizu
The last article was updated on August 16th.
It's already been over a month.
Although I didn't write about it in the article, the manager went to Inokashira Park during that time.
By the way, what happened to the little grebes in the pond?
■
* The Little Grebe family who have finished raising their children at Benten, Gourd, Nanai, and the pond at Inokashira Park.
This year, the pair who failed to raise their children went somewhere without trying to raise their children again.
Inokashira Park Pond Kaibori was held from the end of last year to the beginning of this year.
Immediately after that, this year's pond probably was not suitable for raising little grebes.
Even though I was worried about the success of the little grebe, three families succeeded in breeding, and a total of eight chicks were able to grow.
The chicks, who had been spoiled by their parents until mid-August, must have become independent.
By the end of August, the chicks with their parents disappeared completely.
Although the number of little grebes found in the pond increases and decreases, there are only about four birds, two adult birds and two chicks.
Each chick and the parent birds are acting as they please with the people in the pond.
In July, six adult birds, eight chicks, and the lost little grebes must have flown to a new world somewhere far away.
Little Grebes, which usually rarely fly, may wonder if they can really fly, but they have fine feathers.
Is it because I don't usually fly because I'm saving my physical strength for the time of departure?
The little grebes that remain in the pond now are in different places, and I don't know who they are.
There are quite a few things that I can't find because it's hidden somewhere.
The caretaker imagines that the two adult birds found in Imaike are a pair of the Nanai Bridge family, and the two chicks are Benten's brothers.
Two adult birds were confirmed to mate in front of the Aquatic Life House at the beginning of September.
Feathers are fine when flapping, and the flight ability seems to be quite high.
The temperature has begun to drop sharply at the end of September.
The noisy cicada's voice disappeared completely, and the dragonfly flying over the pond disappeared completely.
The number of little grebes has decreased, and I'm lonely.
Mosquitoes are still flying around, sometimes bitten by mosquitoes, and itching distracts some of their loneliness.
Mosquitoes, a summer tradition, will soon disappear.
Now, the little grebe parents and chicks who raised their children are swimming around in the pond in search of food.
The pond isn't that big either, so of course the little grebes come across friends.
They are far from each other, but sometimes they seem to approach each other and greet each other.
Do you think "Maybe mom?" "My son?" Twice
When a little grebe swimming in a pond finds another little grebe, they slowly approach each other.
At this time, the young birds approached the adult birds more aggressively.
Adult birds are listening to the state of chicks (young birds).
Do you think that chicks (young birds) will feed you?
Adult and young birds exchanging silent greetings Gourd September 23
The adult bird dived after observing the appearance of the chick (young bird) for a while.
The young bird was waiting on the spot for the adult bird to emerge.
As soon as the adult bird appeared on the surface of the water, the chick (young bird) approached the adult bird.
"Maybe mom?"
Whether her growth confirmed that she wasn't her child, or she thought she wasn't spoiled anymore, she dived again and went far away. rice field.
When the young birds also went far away, the chicks (young birds) swam in the opposite direction.
Encounters are also between chicks (young birds).
As one young bird was swimming in Benten Pond, I found another young bird approaching.
Then, once hiding on the shore, observe the other party.
Perhaps after a while, it was confirmed that the other party was a brother, and the young bird that was hiding screamed "Pirurururururyu ...!" Much shorter than the pair of adult little grebes screaming.
The other bird who heard it slowly went to the source of the cry.
I wonder if he's saying, "Hey brothers, have you been doing well after a long time?" September 13 Benten
When the called chicks (young birds) found the called chicks (young birds), they slowly approached each other and observed each other.
Did they confirm that they were brothers?
After that, I snuggled up with two birds for a while and slowly swam on the surface of the water.
When I stopped swimming, I approached him so that my face touched again and observed the other person.
At the same time as each other finishes observing each other again, one bird goes into the water, and the other one immediately follows and goes into the water.
It seems that they are swimming together in the water, and they emerged in the same place almost at the same time.
As soon as one dived, the other followed immediately.
I'm sure it's a reunion of those close brothers.
We may have remembered those nostalgic days when we were little.
However, I think I meet often.
Do they sometimes feel lonely because they are acting alone these days?
At that time, I'm sure I will take a walk while looking for friends.

* Explanation,
Hyotan ...
Raised three chicks, a family that bred near the gourd bridge.
It lays eggs for the first time this year, but the nest collapsed just before the chicks hatched, and suddenly a new nest was rebuilt and three chicks were raised safely.
I laid four eggs. But the last egg to hatch seems to have been eaten by a snake.
One of the chicks was relentlessly bullied by the parent bird, but seems to have grown up safely.

Benten ...
The family that breeds in Benten Pond and started breeding in Inokashira Park for the third time this year.
He laid five eggs, but the first one seems to have sunk to the bottom of the pond because the nest was immature and rolled.
Four eggs hatched safely, but the last chick that hatched died the next day.
Three chicks have grown up safely. The two brothers were very close and often acted together.
It seems that the two birds featured this time are also their brothers.

Nanai ...
A family that bred in the bush of reeds that crossed Nanai Bridge to the Kichijoji side and went about 50 meters to the left.
I tried to build a nest around Nanai Bridge from an early stage, but it did not breed easily.
When the nest begins to be built, the rat snake scouts in the immediate vicinity. Such a thing happened many times and it was hard to decide the location of the nest.
Is the bush around Nanai Bridge the home of the rat snake?
Finally, the nest was completed in the place where the reeds grow and succeeded in breeding.
Four chicks hatched, but only two survived to the end.

Aquatic Life House ...
The family that first hatched chicks this year.
Five chicks hatched smoothly, but one abandoned parenting, the other one was abusive due to stress, and the family separated.
I suspect it was due to my father's affair, but the truth is a mystery.
(Later, I talked to a person who saw the scene that his neighbor, Little Grebe, had relentlessly attacked and all the children had been killed.)
