"Little Grebe Parenting, Sequel'' Part 5, Spot-Billed chicks

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.

The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.

Seven eastern spot-Billed chicks newly added to the pond

A new companion has joined the pond in Inokashira Park.

It is a chick of seven spot-Billed chicks.

There was a little drama with Little Grebe, so this time I will tell you from a spot-Billed perspective.

A spot-Billed turtle parent and child who appeared in the pond of Inokashira just a few days ago.

I think he grew up somewhere unknowingly.

What kind of feeling is the parent bird that first takes out to the pond where the chicks are opened?

At first, the spot-Billed chick with seven chicks moves back and forth between small areas and ponds, gradually expanding its range of action while watching the situation.

On this day, I went on an expedition to the edge of the pond, near the gourd bridge.

Parents and children of the spot-Billed turtle approach the little grebe nest without noticing it at all, and approach the little grebe nest more and more.

When I noticed, the grebe's nest was in front of me, and the grebe's nest was in the lower right

The little grebe incubating was fully prepared for an approaching intruder.

The eggs have already been covered with nest material and are ready to dive into the water and attack.

The parent and child of the spot-Billed turtle may recognize it as an intruder who came to attack the egg.

The spot-Billed parents seemed to notice some changes in the movement of the little grebe, but instead of turning back, they casually chose to pass by.

It seems he didn't expect the little grebe to seriously attack.

The spot-Billed turtle notices something unusual, "The Little Grebe is about to attack!", But it's too late.

He managed to rush past the edge of the shore, where a little grebe attack began underwater.

Little Grebe, "Whoever approaches the nest! Get out!"

"Acha! Acha!"

The spot-Billed grebe parent and child, who had no intention of attacking the little grebe eggs, managed to survive the attack of the little grebe, and hurried away from the grebe's nest with the chicks.

The spot-Billed chick thinks that all the chicks have escaped the difficulty, but one chick is missing.

He seems to have noticed that he has fallen apart.

Unfortunately, the one chick left behind is near the grebe's nest, and although he can hear his voice, he cannot see it.

The parent bird takes six chicks and goes to rescue the chicks left behind by relying on the voice of the chicks, but it is near the grebe's nest.

And then!

Suddenly, the body of the spot-Billed turtle was dragged into the water!

Suddenly, "Basha !!!", the body of the spot-Billed turtle was dragged into the water.

It is dragged into the water with tremendous force.

An underwater attack of a little grebe trying to protect its nest and eggs!

The parent bird flutters its wings in a hurry, but its body is completely submerged.

Even so, I was afraid that the power of the little grebe to protect the child, and the eastern spot-Billed turtle, which is more than twice as large, would be dragged into the water.

The six surprised chicks of the eastern spot-Billed chicks hurriedly escaped to see what had happened.

This time, six chicks are evacuated and headed to rescue the chicks from the sky to avoid attacks from the water.

Little Grebe attacks as soon as it lands on the water,

The little grebe's attack is so intense that it is difficult to rescue the chicks.

The chicks left behind are still near the grebe's nest.

The parent bird manages to rescue the chick, but is inevitably driven back by the little grebe.

Hearing this turmoil, a hero of the spot-Billed turtle appears.

He probably came to help the little chicks, realizing that they were in danger.

The hero who came to help was careful and succeeded in keeping the little grebe away from the chicks of the spot-Billed turtle.

In such a gap, her mother, the spot-Billed chick, succeeded in rescuing the stray chick!

Parents and children who escape the difficulties and leave the grebe's nest,

The spot-Billed family had a day to realize the fear of little grebes.

Little Grebes swam intimidatingly until they saw the spot-Billed cubs move far away.

"Strong grebe," was.

Even a large cormorant does not get too close to a little grebe, probably because he knows the strength of this little grebe.
