"Little Grebe Parenting, Sequel" Part 8, chicks have hatched!

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.

The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.

This year's first chick and a parent bird that is busy repairing its nest May 31 (Aquatic Life House)

The chicks behind the aquatic life house hatched while I wasn't watching for a few days!

First chick this year

This Monday, May 27th, a little grebe egg behind the aquatic life house that was supposed to hatch.

According to the story, after the first chick hatched on Sunday, it seems that it has hatched smoothly one by one.

Estimating from the date of laying the egg, the number of incubation days is about 20 days?

Four of the five eggs hatched safely, leaving one egg.

I am worried that the nest was incomplete and the eggs had come into contact with the water at the time of the first spawning three weeks ago.

I hope the remaining one egg will hatch safely.

The nest, which looked poor at first, seems to be sturdy now as it has been reinforced.

The surrounding reeds are also moderately thick and camouflaged.

Even if it is overgrown, it will be a blindfold for you and you will be delayed in finding foreign enemies.

However, I'm worried about the nests fixed to the reeds and whether they can cope with fluctuations in the water level.

The feet do not stretch or contract due to changes in water level, so they may sink as they are when it rains.

The parent bird feeds the little chicks, mostly like the Amano shrimp.

From now on, as the chicks grow larger, they will have to bring more food.

Furthermore, there are many foreign enemies aiming at chicks.

Little Grebe couple, I'm getting busy from now on.

However, despite being busy, the parent birds who take care of the chicks always seem to have fun.

How about the gourd family?

Eggs can be seen when the eggs are warmed, and the parent bird waiting for the change goes out happily.

At Inokashira Park, it is the turn of the little grebe that laid eggs for the first time this year.

I thought it was going well, but the nest was washed away and collapsed, and the egg that was about to hatch sank in the pond.

Regain your mind and try again in a new place.

So far, three eggs have been laid in the newly created nest.

It seems to be going well for the time being.

After the rain, the nest is still a little lonely,

I would like you to continue repairing the nest so that it will not be washed away.

Little Grebe waiting for his companion while incubating, going out like a long-awaited

The person who comes back misses the egg again, and says, "The feel of that egg!", It seems that he has finished eating enough food and wants to incubate.

What is the pair of Bentenike?

Five eggs are likely to be busy once they hatch.

The pair of Bentenike, which also steadily increased the number of eggs, currently has 5 eggs.

This nest is also a little lonely.

Under the surface of the water, aquatic plants seem to grow quickly, and the nest material is shifting from dead leaves to aquatic plants.

It seems that there are still few fish, but water striders, yagos, and aquatic insects are abundant.

The surface of the pond is always moving by small animals.

It seems that aquatic plants are growing steadily, so it seems that shrimp and small fish will increase steadily in the future.

A large amount of live food is needed to successfully grow the carnivorous little grebes and chicks located in the upper and middle tiers of the ecosystem pyramid.

It seems that the abundant nature where such small animals that feed can live is now being revived in the pond.

This is probably the effect of the shaving.

And the little grebe of Nanai Bridge, where the location of the nest was hard to decide.

It seems that the nest was finally decided, and the place was finally decided earlier this week. Currently 2 eggs May 31st

The little grebe's turn was trying to build a nest near Nanai Bridge, a snake boulevard.

Finally, the location of the nest was decided.

A little off the snake boulevard.

However, this is the opposite bank where the aquatic life house and the little grebe live.

Did you talk enough with your neighbor?

For a while, I was seeing a skirmish with my neighbor.

What about these days?

Perhaps they built a nest in the shadow of a reed so that their neighbors wouldn't find it.

Next time, I'll talk about skirmishes over territory.

to be continued
