This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggle of little grebes that bred in Inokashira Park in 2018.
The chicks who had been observing the previous year were wiped out. Let's see the whole story until the chicks grow up well this year! I started writing this blog.
An approach rather than a turf war?
As of May 31, No. 4 is incubating and raising children at Inokashira Park.
Skirmishes were held for days over the territory of the incubation and hunting grounds.
In fact, it also seems to have some other purpose.
■
Meeting between neighbors
Even after the approximate location of the territory was decided, there was a battle over the territory boundaries at about the same time each morning.
There may actually be another purpose.
It was 7:30 in the morning that was unfolding at that time
The same time zone almost every day for several days.
The Bentenike pair, the Nanai Bridge pair, and the Gourd Bridge pair all participated.
The location is near the boat pond and Nanai Bridge.
Nobody's territory, this is a neutral area.
The pair of gourd bridges had already started incubation, so the male (probably) entered the war alone.
My wife is an answering machine in the nest.
(I will write it with male and female assertions, but there is no confirmation, and it is arbitrary by the observation of the caretaker. Males are slightly small, muscular, glossy and dark-skinned, females are plump, semi-glossy and fair-skinned, and Personality and behavior are also quite different. Confirmed by looking at mating)
Nanai Bridge and Benten participated in the war with good friends.
Before the battle with each other, the husband gave a demonstration to his wife.
The husband shows his wife running vigorously on the surface of the water.
However, they seem to be fidgeting with each other.
Is it really a fight or a meeting?
Each turn runs vigorously on the surface of the water toward another turn.
The scalpel may follow, but ...
If that happens, this one will come back and the other party will fight back again.
Repeating this kind of thing several times, each one will return to their territory and nest, wondering if they will be satisfied in about 10 minutes.
It's not like a serious turf war, it feels like it stops in front of the other party.
Maybe it's also the item of the neighbor's partner?
It seems that the victims are also waiting for the other party to come.
Such a scene was unfolded for many days.
I'm sure it was part of the exchange of information in breeding each other.
This is a quarrel
A serious game over territory!
If you invade your opponent's territory, you will be relentlessly attacked, you can not protect your territory without defense
The little grebe couple finally decided the location of the nest, and as expected, they were hated by the aquatic life house family across the street.
The Nanai Bridge couple were trying to build a nest on Snake Street (a place where snakes usually pass), and it was difficult to decide where to nest.
I want to build a nest in a place where I can feel at ease! !! Twice
I have to expand the territory somehow!
I went for a walk in the direction of Ochanomizu (where the well water boiled) many times, but every time I was dismissed due to strong opposition from the males of the Aquatic Life House.
I was chasing after many times asking how far I could forgive.
The male of Nanai Bridge is always chased unilaterally.
This kind of conflict was repeated many times, and I decided to set up a nest on the shore on the left side of this photo, perhaps because I was able to expand the territory a little.
In the back of the photo, on the right side of the opposite bank, there is a nest of the aquatic life house family.
It seems that the nest was able to be made by repeating such conflicts and somehow getting forgiveness.
These days, all the pairs have begun to incubate and everyone is busy.
There are fewer morning meetings and conflicts than before.
I'm afraid I'm too busy.
