This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggles of little grebes in Inokashira Park in 2017.
Catch food for chicks, but can't see chicks
■
On August 13th (2017), no chicks were found in the nest of the gourd bridge.
It doesn't ride on the back of the parent bird, and I can't find it in the surrounding area.
I searched for a while, but I couldn't find any chicks anywhere. It seems that the four chicks were finally wiped out.
The parent bird catches the fish and carries it to the nest, but there are no chicks there.
Perhaps the chicks were alive until just a while ago, and there are people who witnessed the chicks in the morning, so there is a strong possibility.
With food added to their beaks, the parent bird searched for chicks around the nest for a while.
But I just can't find it.
I searched for chicks for a while, but I couldn't find them anywhere, so I ate the food I brought with me.
Perhaps he knew the fact that the chick had died.
The expression of the parent bird seems to be very sad because the child who was treated with affection has disappeared.
It's a shame because the parent bird was just about to start raising the last chick.
Perhaps the pair of gourd bridges aren't on good terms with each other, and they weren't very supportive of each other, so once they went out, they couldn't come back.
The parent birds that remained in the nest and took care of the chicks often left the chicks in the nest because their companions did not return easily.
For that reason, it seems that he has failed to raise chicks.
There should be chicks, but there are no chicks there
It seems that the remaining parent birds had to go hunting, leaving chicks, as long as the match did not come back.
The chicks are vulnerable during that time.
Although it is safe to wait in the nest, the chicks that cannot wait for their parents will fall to the surface of the water.
It may have been killed by a turtle in such a vacancy.
A red-eared slider was wandering around the nest where the chicks were gone.
A parent bird who has become lonely,
That night, the parent bird, who had lost all the chicks, spent lonely in the nest.
I haven't seen my partner for a while.
I'm alone.
Three days later, on August 16th (2017), the nest that had lost the Lord and was abandoned was sadly hit by rain.
There was no grebe there, but a spot-Billed turtle eroding its nest.
You may be looking for some food in the nest material made by the little grebe.
Eastern spot-Billed turtle searching for nest material
Little Grebes here on the Gourd Bridge began nesting at the end of June and laid four eggs at the beginning of July.
All the eggs hatched safely at the end of July, but the number decreased day by day and eventually all the chicks were lost.
The nest was constantly repaired as well as other little grebes, and a sturdy nest that could withstand the rain was maintained.
However, the parent bird took a long time to take his eyes off the chicks for fishing, and during that time he lost one and another chick, which seems to have led to this failure.
Now that everything is wasted, this bitter experience will be put to good use in the next breeding.
