"Little Grebe Parenting" Part 16, Hina who became able to dive

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggles of little grebes in Inokashira Park in 2017.

I want to go beyond the stake with the parent bird, but I still can't dive

As of August 23, the only grebe in Nanai Bridge that is in the process of raising children.

Two chicks grew quickly, and one chick was able to dive a little.

Occasionally I try to spoil it and sneak into the back of the parent bird, but it is already too big for the parent bird to piggyback on.

Most of the time I started to spend most of my time away from the nest and taking a walk on the water.

The distance traveled is wide, and I go back and forth around Nanai Bridge many times.

During the walk, the parent bird is a place where you have to dive over obstacles (boat stop stakes) and go beyond it for a short while.

One chick dives without difficulty and clears, to the parent bird, but the remaining one can not dive yet.

The chicks who couldn't dive managed to detour and arrived at the parent bird.

The parent bird also listened to the situation and slowly swam and waited for the chicks.

Parent birds also appear to pass through places that they cannot pass without deliberately diving to teach them to dive.

Hina practicing diving constantly

The chicks that couldn't dive returned to their nests with their parents and kept their heads in the water.

It seems that he is practicing diving.

It seems that chicks who can't dive yet want to be able to dive as quickly as their brothers.

The parent bird was in the immediate vicinity and was watching the chicks.

Meanwhile, the chick, who is already able to dive, went for a walk far away with another parent bird.

It gets dark around sunset, and I thought that I would use the old nest as a ridge, but like her last blog, I didn't know where it was, but I moved to another ridge.

The old nest does not seem to be safe during the night.

She must have been scared.

Parent birds who leave two chicks and go far away

The parent birds went far away with the chicks that couldn't catch up.

On the other side, a little grebe parent and child who had previously fought over territory live.

For the time being, I wonder if it will be a wait-and-see approach, securing a place for the fence, and confirming safety.

The formation that swims straight and fast with two birds apart looks like a threat to the family next door.

Hina who loses sight of her parent bird and waits on the surface of the water

The chicks who had left behind were waiting for the return of their parents on the surface of the water without crying.

It is probably safest to float on the surface of the water without making a voice.

Once you take your eyes off this too, you will not be able to distinguish it from the leaves floating on the surface of the water and you will lose track of where the chicks are.

Even so, I'm worried that foreign enemies might kill me when I see weak and defenseless chicks floating on the surface of the water.

Hina happily heading to the roost with her parent bird

After a while, the parent bird returned to look for the chicks, probably because the roost was secured.

Hina happily replied, "Pu, Pui, Pui !!!" to the voice calling for the chicks of the parent bird, and followed the parent bird.

Each parent bird took each chick to a roost.
