"Little Grebe Parenting" Part 8, Eggs have hatched!

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces the breeding and child-rearing struggles of little grebes in Inokashira Park in 2017.

A small life just born, already strong appetite

The little grebe we are going to discuss this time is a pair that breeds near the gourd bridge, which is different from the previous "Little Grebe Observation Diary" No.7.

As of July 26 (2017), two sets of little grebes are incubating at Inokashira Park.

Both sets of eggs hatched today.

This time, we will take up a pair near the gourd bridge.

The caretaker has seen four eggs in the nest, only one of which has hatched today.

Hina indistinguishable from nest material

You see, the chick resting in the feathers rolled down as soon as the parent bird stood up.

There is a chick that has rolled down at the end of the arrow.

It is assimilated with dead leaves so that even if you know it, you will not notice it.

Is it alright?

The chicks can already walk on their own, so it's okay!

The parent bird has no sign of helping and only watches over the chicks.

Without worrying, he crawls up and dives into the feathers of his parent bird with the power of only one chick.

A small life that is only the size of an adult's thumb, and already has the power to live strong.
