"Urban goshawks, breeding records" 12, before breeding

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park in Tokyo from July 2017 to December 2018.

Is it time to prepare for copulation? January 15

The construction of the nest has been completed, and it seems that it is about to lay eggs. Introducing the state of females who are about to lay eggs.

When the construction of the nest and the transportation of the male nest material were nearing the end,

Perhaps the female is inviting the male, it is fidgeting on a thick branch near the nest.

Males are busy building their nests and have a hard time resting their hands.

After a while, the male came near the female.

The female appears to have told the male that she is ready for mating.

The male did not seem to be ready for mating yet, and she quickly flew away. (Upper photo)

I couldn't observe the goshawk for a while, the caretaker who left Japan immediately after the heavy snowfall in January.

Meanwhile, he heard that the copulation was successful. It was April 22 that the caretaker returned to Japan and reunited with the observations.

It seems that the females that have completed mating are steadily preparing for breeding.

Goshawk steadily preparing for breeding in beautiful fresh green in April

Three months have passed since then, and the forest, which had fallen leaves and was cold, is now covered with fresh greenery, and you can feel the power of life and the momentum of life that is full of bullets.

Many insects that were trapped somewhere during the cold season are getting warmer and increasing in number day by day.

It is also time for many other birds, not just goshawks, to begin preparing for breeding.

In such a beautiful fresh green forest, I found a goshawk in the usual place.

The female looks a little tighter than when she saw it in January, and she seems to be more fearless.

Spawning is imminent, is it the last bath before spawning?

A female bathing in a tree hollow.

Metz likes this place quite a bit, and despite the river nearby, she always drinks and bathes in this cave.

It is also a place where water was regularly added by wild bird lovers.

For some reason the male hated this place and always went to the river.

The caretaker himself does not like to modify wild animals, but this is a city park, a place for people to relax, and such places are now the point of contact between wild animals (wild birds) and people. There is.

What was done in favor of the people is an example of acceptance by wild animals.

It's a little far from the wild, but it's originally a city park.

It is also a place to explore how wild animals and humans interact with each other.

The relationship between this wild animal and humans is also interesting.

In fact, many water fields have been artificially created for animals in Kenya and Tanzania's national parks.

Unfortunately, the tree was originally damaged, but the water that had accumulated in the cave had infiltrated it, and the tree rotted more. This tree was cut at the end of the year and is now gone.

Female with no abdominal wings, seems ready to incubate

A scalpel that dries its wings after bathing, at which time it was seen that the wings on its abdomen had disappeared cleanly.

It is a change in the body that allows the skin to come into direct contact with the egg to incubate and heat to be transferred efficiently.

It's a sign that the incubation preparation is complete.

If you look closely, it looks like the lower part is bulging in the shape of a chubby egg.

Eggs may be formed in the female belly.

Spawning and incubation are about to begin.
