Birds of prey living in the city, "Urban goshawk, 1"

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

This blog introduces goshawks that live in the green areas of urban areas of Tokyo Japan.

In addition to Inokashira Park, there are many green parks in Tokyo as places for people to relax.

In a concrete-filled city, the waterside green space is not only a place for people to relax, but also an oasis for many creatures, wild birds, animals and insects.

There is always a drama of a wide variety of creatures.

Such green spaces scattered in urban areas are also an indispensable fountain of life for birds of prey at the top of the ecosystem.

A young goshawk, a young adult bird with a fearless look

A goshawk that has been designated as a rare wild animal and plant due to a drastic decrease in the number at one time.

The number is increasing in Tokyo due to the generous protection of the people.

The goshawk in the photo is a young bird about two months old, and I still can't hunt it well.

Sometimes the parent bird does not feed the young bird for days.

At that time, the hungry young bird manages to hunt by himself.

At first, young birds try to hunt small birds, but it is difficult to catch them.

Therefore, the cicadas that are easy to catch are targeted, and the prey is only cicadas.

The parent bird may dare to hungry the young bird without feeding it and encourage it to voluntarily try to hunt.

At the beginning, I was a little scared even if it was a small cicada.

I've never had a cicada carried by a parent bird as food, so maybe it's the first time I've tried it.

Cicada hunting? Goshawk chick

Cicadas that are easy to catch and occupy the taste of young birds, catch and eat many

repeat.

Cicada feathers are eaten after being moistened.

As expected, cicadas do not fill my stomach, and I am hungry whether I eat or eat.

I'm getting tired of it.

The chicks will gain experience many times and gradually improve their hunting skills.

Feast for the first time in 3 days, even a small piece of bone was engrossed

According to a story I heard from a person observed at the scene, the parent bird brought food for the first time in 3 days.

The first treat in a while was an exotic parakeet.

It seems that the parent bird ate half of the prey it caught and carried the other half for the chicks.

A parent bird that feeds its offspring and immediately flies away

When the chicks were fed, the parent birds immediately flew away.

It may be urging the child to leave the parent.

It was a scene where I felt the bond between parents and children and the strength of goshawks.

Young birds that are getting stronger day by day

The range of action of young birds is expanding day by day.

Only cicadas can be hunted, but as I repeat, hunting is getting better and better.

I also heard that he caught the rats himself.

I want you to grow up safely as it is, and to continue your life in a park somewhere again.

The good news is that the previously rare birds of prey can now live in the cities of Tokyo, and that the numbers are increasing and becoming stable.

Creatures that have been persecuted without being noticed by many people at one time.

I think it's a very good thing that many people are interested in such creatures and are trying to restore nature as it should be.

There may be pros and cons and various problems, but I would like to keep an eye on future trends, hoping that it will improve.

Thank you for reading this far.

If you see this blog, why don't you take a look at the creatures that live there even in the park you are used to?

You will surely see a drama of adorable and strong creatures there.

We have compiled a video of this goshawk chick standing alone and made it available on YouTube.

Right now (March 2020), we are serializing a breeding record of goshawks, "Goshawk, a bird of prey that has advanced into the city," which we have observed for about a year on our blog.

This is the second breeding record of the goshawk couple who raised the young birds featured this time. If you are interested, please take a look.
