I'm back in Japan. "Goshawk to see after a long time"

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

Thank you very much for your patience, I will update the blog for the first time in a while.

From Kenya to Japan alone again.

What I think when I come back to Japan is that I can easily go out to shoot anywhere.

You can easily go anywhere by foot, train, or bicycle.

Even if you carry a large piece of equipment with a huge telephoto lens, you can easily take pictures without hesitation, so it's very easy.

In many African countries, it's always a good idea to say "what's your permission to shoot?" Or "what are you shooting?" When using a big camera or lens, such as in the city. I have to think about it, and I get a little tired.

Besides, there are quite a few things that you shouldn't shoot, so you have to be careful.

Also, in a park in Nairobi, you have to pay 1000 yen to take a picture.

You have to pay 10,000 yen for the video!

But don't worry if you're going to Kenya, it's free in most parks.

Even so, it is certainly not an environment where you can easily shoot anywhere like in Japan.

So, this time about Otaka who returned to Japan and resumed for the first time in a while.

オオタカ、飛翔

Goshawk, who resumes after a long time, seems to be doing his best safely.

I remember it was very cold in the metropolitan area, which was covered with snow in the latter half of January before I left Japan last time, and the temperature was below freezing.

And when I returned from Kenya in late April, the temperature in Tokyo exceeded 30 degrees Celsius!

In winter, the trees that had fallen leaves and became a buzz cut are covered with fresh green leaves.

The scenery changes from the cold world of white and brown to the world of primary colors such as green and red, and the air feels sweet.

It seems that the caretaker has jumped over spring and summer has come for three months when he was away from Japan.

Having been near the equator in Africa, where the rainy and dry seasons repeat for many years, this change feels fresh again.

I wish I had come back when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.

Even though it is the rainy season and the dry season in Kenya, there is almost no rain in the rainy season, and it rains in the dry season.

The time is often off.

In fact, the hours of sunshine may be longer in the rainy season than in the dry season.

Kenya is in the middle of the rainy season now, but this year it has been raining a lot earlier than usual.

It rains a lot in East Africa during El Nino, so I wonder if it's El Nino this year.

The clouds are also very thick, and only a few have seen the blue sky for the past one or two months.

I was preparing to take pictures of the starry sky and planets, but in the end I was never dispatched.

積雪後のオオタカ

Three months ago, there was such a pure white world in the city

Immediately before leaving Japan three months ago, the long-desired snow fell on the forest of goshawks, and there was a manager who was shooting the goshawks in the snow.

Even if it didn't snow, I gradually gained weight as I spent many days outside the cold early morning from the end of October, and eventually I gained 10 kilograms.

Did you adapt to the cold, had good food, or lacked exercise? I think all of them apply,

Perhaps he tried to increase his appetite and gain weight in order to adapt to the cold.

As I gained weight, the cold became quite calm.

If you are worried about dieting, beware of winter goshawk observations!

As I returned to Africa and spent time in a warm place again, my weight returned to normal.

The heat doesn't seem to require much fat.

Goshawk females also seem to store fat in winter, whether they are preparing for breeding or adapting to the cold, and look very large and fat.

It may have just swelled the feathers of his body, but his movements are slow and he seems to be unable to hunt.

The photo above was taken the day after the heavy snowfall in Kanto.

There is a snowy landscape all around, and a landscape that you can't imagine in Tokyo.

On this day, unlike yesterday's cold wave, the temperature rises steadily, and the snow that has fallen on the trees melts at once.

Meanwhile, two turtle doves flew down in front of the goshawk, who was relaxing and fluttering.

The distance is short, there are no obstacles, pigeons are unaware of the existence of goshawks, and the height difference is sufficient, which is a perfect condition for hunting!

The goshawk, who was really relaxed, changed his facial expression in an instant and raised his heart rate at once (guess).

A frame that captures the expression of such a goshawk.

Immediately after this, he moved his neck from side to side to get an accurate sense of distance to the prey, and immediately tried to attack the pigeons.

The pigeon soon realized the danger and quickly flew away.

The fat goshawk had no hands or feet to escape the prey.

Similarly, the caretaker who gained weight could not take a picture of the slow-moving goshawk hunting because his movements became slow and his hands and legs did not appear in the hunting scene.

There are advantages and disadvantages to gaining weight and losing weight.

Thinking about how fat 10 kg is, a road bike with 5 2 liter water bottles and a caretaker. It's quite heavy.

I'm surprised that the weight of fat was a part of my body.

When winter comes again, I thought that this weight of fat would stick to the caretaker's body again in order to cope with the cold, but I think I will miss something again.

Thank you for reading this far.

While in Japan, I will keep an eye on the trends of this goshawk.

I'm planning to update my blog on an irregular basis, so I wonder if the "blog is freely uploaded" once in a while. Please take a look.

Next time, I will write about Little Grebes in Inokashira Park.
