"Urban Goshawks, Breeding Records" 14, Preparations for Breeding of Japanese Sparrowhawks

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park Tokyo Japan from July 2017 to December 2018.

Male approaches female from below

This time, let's take a look at the state of the sparrowhawk who moved next to the goshawk's house.

Tsumi, who began preparing for breeding in the immediate vicinity of the goshawk breeding, continued to scout the goshawk for a while.

The goshawk also confirmed who the neighbor was, confirmed that it would not damage the breeding, or was disciplined by the relentless security of the male sparrowhawk, and did not come too close to the sparrowhawk. ..

The sparrowhawks have calmed down a little and are preparing for breeding.

Perhaps when the sparrowhawk chicks hatched, they stopped coming with the courage to add food to their chicks.

The sparrowhawks were mated when the goshawks almost stopped coming.

A female standing still while looking around on a thick tree branch in a slightly open place. It looks like they are waiting for the male to do it because they are ready to mate.

The male, who was observing the female's appearance nearby, approached from directly below the female at the right time, and leaned straight on the female's back.

Sparrowhawk mating,

The mating was fleeting, and the male flew somewhere as soon as the mating was completed.

The female was there for a moment and resumed building the nest and carrying the lumber.

This happened on May 4, the goshawks that had mated a few months ago, and the nests had been prepared for a long time.

Compared to that, the preparation period required for breeding is overwhelmingly short.

It tells us that a goshawk, which is larger than a Japanese sparrowhawk, needs a long period of time and is more difficult to breed successfully.

Female sparrowhawk carrying leafless branches

Regarding the nest material, most of the branches have no leaves, but from the beginning, the branches with leaves were also mixed and carried to the nest.

Everywhere, how to build a nest seems to be different from the goshawk.

It seems that the cause was that Tsumi once changed the construction location of the nest, and the first location was not very calm.

From the beginning, I also carried the branches with leaves to the nest

Unlike goshawks, most of them carried nesting materials. Meanwhile, the male seems to be monitoring the territory and hunting at the same time.

If you succeed in hunting, you will not forget to bring it as a treat to the female.

Upon hearing the news of the treat, the female rested her hands, was tired of work, and healed her hungry body.

As the nest was nearing completion, males were also seen helping to carry the nest material.

Make good use of artificial objects for hunting, and chase and catch small birds on the net

Hunting seems to be a male job during this time.

The main hunting grounds are the surrounding parks and school grounds.

Make good use of the net in the above photo to drive small birds and hunt.

The small birds that became surprised by the approach of the birds of prey are attracted to the net and caught.

It seems that Tsumi is well acclimatized to the city while making good use of artificial objects.

Goshawks sometimes do similar net hunting.

If the net is as small and tall as the picture above, the little birds will not be able to escape and will be caught.

However, it is not a fool to be killed, and it is not possible to continue hunting in the same place because you will soon learn that it is dangerous here and you will not be able to approach it.

Although there is a risk that the chicks will be targeted by the small but strong Japanese sparrowhawk, the goshawk, I dared to choose a breeding place near the goshawk.

Goshawks who go over crows in terms of both power and flight ability always repel crows, and for Tsumi, who is far from crows in power, he seems to have seen that there is less risk than the danger of goshawks.

Unfortunately, however, the sparrowhawk chicks could not live until they left the nest.

After a while, I hear that the sparrowhawk chicks have become part of the body of the goshawk chicks.

Around this time, the goshawk seemed to lay eggs and began to incubate.
