"Urban goshawks, breeding records" 17, chicks that showed up!

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park Tokyo Japan from July 2017 to December 2018.

May 27, I saw the head of a chick

Last time, I introduced that the eggs seem to be hatching from the behavior of the mother bird, but the chicks can not be seen.

This time it will be the continuation.

No chicks can be seen, but the frequency of feeding mothers has increased day by day.

It's been quite a few days since I first brought something like a piece of meat to the nest.

During that time, the chicks seem to have grown quite large.

When I listened carefully, I began to hear a faint, high-pitched voice from the nest, "Pyo, Pyo Pyo Pyo, Pyo!", And that voice became louder day by day. ..

It won't be long before you can see the chicks.

The caretaker first saw the chicks on May 26th.

When the mother tried to feed her, a small white head popped out on the nest.

Despite her small body, she had a strong appetite and urged her mother to feed her mother over and over again until she was able to eat it in her mouth.

Her mother continued to chop her pieces of meat into small pieces until the chicks were satisfied, many times to fit the chick's mouth.

It turns out that one chick is definitely there, but the mother feeds the other chicks that are hidden behind the nest.

From that state, it seems that there are two or more chicks.

I saw two birds, May 30th

Three days later, it turned out that there were two chicks.

After only three days, the chicks were one size larger.

The growth of chicks is surprisingly very fast.

On June 1st, I was able to confirm the appearance of three chicks.

And on June 1st, I was able to see three chicks at the same time.

Five days have passed since May 27, and the size of the chicks seems to have more than doubled.

The amount of food required will increase day by day as the chicks grow, and the hunting father will have to hunt without any time to rest.

Dad is hard.

Dad doing his best for his hungry chicks and his wife, June 1st

The father not only hunts, but also cooks to make it easier to eat by plucking his feathers.

They will bring the food after cooking in the kitchen away from the nest so that the disassembled feathers and pieces of meat will not fall near the nest.

It seems that he tries to keep the inside of the nest and the area around the nest clean and clean.

A lot of wisdom may be used for successful breeding to keep snakes, crows, mites, diseases, etc., or crows and other obstacles away from the chicks.

Was it a starling that was caught, hoping that the chicks and his wife would be fed as quickly as possible? The father flew with the feathers of the dismantled bait stuck under his beak.

It can be seen that the male goshawk, who likes cleanliness and is very concerned about seeing it, came in a hurry if the chicks were fed as soon as possible.

Since carnivorous animals and birds of prey live, it is based on many lives for successful breeding.

Goshawk chicks also need a lot of sacrificial prey to grow.

The body of the creature that lost its life becomes a part of the body of the goshawk and lives.

When the nest was approaching, the father who brought the food screamed with his wife without hiding his joy.

Now that all the chicks are growing up safely and the food is abundantly caught, the father will be happy.

During this time when the chicks are still small, the mother receives food at a distance from the nest.

If the chick is hungry, she feeds the chick immediately, but if she is hungry, she feeds it.

It seems that it is well hidden so that it cannot be found in crows.

Naturally, mothers also have to eat food.

to be continued
