"Urban goshawks, breeding records" 18, Goshawk dad doing his best

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park Tokyo Japan from July 2017 to December 2018.

Check once where the father who brings the food back from nowhere and the wife who receives the food are

The three chicks, which are getting bigger day by day, have increased their appetite as they grow up.

To satisfy the appetite of the chicks, Dad began to devote himself to hunting.

Goshawk dad seems to be hunting faster to satisfy the appetite of the three growing chicks.

Where is he hunting? The direction of returning with prey is different every time.

Perhaps they are hunting while changing the hunting ground.

Birds that are hunted as prey are also deadly and will soon not be easily hunted.

In order to continue hunting efficiently for a long period of time, they may be hunting while changing the location and species of prey.

Parent birds (fathers) during this period do not hunt much near their nests.

Perhaps they are trying not to disturb the area around the nest so that it will be a good hunting ground in case the chicks leave the nest and become independent.

The chicks grew very fast and soon the nest became cramped with a mother.

Mothers vacated their nests for their children and often stayed outside the nests.

Even outside the nest, the chicks are still very small and almost vulnerable to foreign enemies.

The mother is in a place where she can see the chicks even if she is not in the nest, and where she can return immediately if something happens to the chicks.

And he always cares about whether foreign enemies such as crows are approaching.

As the chicks grew and became stronger, the distance between the chicks and their mothers gradually increased.

Three chicks with a strong appetite, when they are hungry, actively ask their mother for food.

At that time, the mother goes to get food, but when she runs out of food, she feels uneasy about her husband's quick feeding.

As the chicks grew larger, they needed more food and more often waited for their husbands to return.

Sometimes he goes near the top of the tree and seems to be cheering while watching his distant husband hunting.

"Welcome back!" June 6th, when my husband came home with food

When the husband brings food, the couple happily scream each other.

Husband "I caught food!"

Wife "What did you catch?"

Husband "It's a starling!"

Wife"Why not the pigeon again?"

Husband "Don't overdo it! Catch the one I can catch!"

wife, "Then, I'll ask for pigeons this time!"

Do you have such a conversation? The male had no time to rest and immediately went to the next hunt.

The food is handed over in such a place, and when the female puts the prey and receives it, the father goes out to the next hunt without a break.

Food is delivered on a slightly open branch.

It seems that there are places I like and use often, but I don't seem to always use a fixed place.

The male puts the food in a suitable place, and the female immediately picks up the food.

The prey has already been feathered by some males and is ready to eat.

The female who receives the food will take it as soon as the chicks are hungry.

The female who received the food carries the food to the nest where the chicks are waiting.
