"Urban goshawks, breeding records" 2, a young bird returning with parent

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

"The story of a goshawk, a bird of prey that has advanced into the city"

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park Tokyo Japan from July 2017 to December 2018.

A young goshawk that I met for only a week after learning that a goshawk is nesting last year.

Almost every day during that time, I went to the park with my heart full of hope, "What kind of behavior will I see today?"

I've seen the parent birds feed their chicks several times since I started observing them, but since then the parent birds haven't been able to feed them.

A parent bird that waits but does not return, and a young bird that initially caught insects such as cicadas and was hungry.

That alone shouldn't make me hungry, and I keep calling the parent bird, saying, "Pee-yo-pee! (I'm hungry!)", But there is no parent bird who can answer that.

And catch the cicada again.

Last August, 2017, the prey of the goshawk that just left the nest is only cicadas.

I'm hungry with only insects, but there is a "semi" in front of my eyes. I need to be able to catch big prey quickly.

The young birds began to leave the park where the nest was located day by day.

Are you looking for food, for parents, or for friends?

The young birds, who initially returned on a day trip, became longer as the days went by, and eventually almost never returned to the park where the nest was.

The reason why the parent birds brought food little by little was probably to encourage the chicks to become independent.

If you don't do that, you'll just be spoiled for a long time.

You will not be able to stand alone.

But where did the young birds, including their parents, go?

I go to the park thinking that the chicks may come back again, but I can't see them after all.

It doesn't seem to go that far, as there are eyewitness testimonies not far from the park.

The goshawk I see for the first time in two months is probably a parent and child.

Two months later, one day, a parent bird and a young bird appeared together in that forest.

Probably the chicks that hatched here and their parent birds.
