"Urban Goshawk, Breeding Record" 27, First Bath

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

"The story of a goshawk, a bird of prey that has advanced into the city Tokyo Japan"

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park in Tokyo from July 2017 to December 2018.

A young bird that has landed on the riverside

The hot and hot days continue every day.

Feeling this heat seems to be the same for goshawks.

The parents were bathing frequently during these hot seasons.

The mother bird was bathing in a tree hollow in the Otaka Forest, and the father bird was bathing in the river.

The three children must have seen the parent birds bathing many times.

At dusk on such a hot day,

A young bird landed on the concrete shore of the river, trying to bathe.

The ground of the forest is now a familiar playground for goshawk children, and the ground around the nest is now a playground for children.

But I haven't landed on the riverside yet.

When I try it for the first time, I'm always cautious.

Again, one of the three birds seems to be trying to take on this bath on behalf of them.

As always, the first challenge seems to be the biggest sister.

The two brothers are invisible, but I'm sure they're observing her sister's behavior somewhere.

It seems that he is looking for a good place to scout the shore and bathe.

The young bird that landed on the shore slowly walked along the concrete shore while observing the river surface.

You're probably looking for a good place to bathe.

It seems that the spot-Billed turtles on the surface of the river have no choice but to bother each other.

When the young goshawks landed on the shore, the spot-Billed turtles also gathered for reconnaissance, saying, "A stranger has arrived!"

Spot-Billed turtles are currently raising children.

I wonder what kind of bad guys are wandering around, and the young males are coming to see what kind of guys are wandering around to protect the children.

It seems that the spot-Billed turtle observed the young goshawk for a while and realized that he was a child who couldn't hunt yet!

Each creature is desperate to protect the children.

Recently, crows rarely come near young birds.

I'm sure the goshawk's father is keeping an eye out and driving away the crows that are likely to hurt their children.

The three children have no way of knowing, but the father bird is watching over the growing children with confidence day by day.

Seems to have found a suitable bathing area

After a while, the young goshawks flew off the shore with the eastern spot-Billed turtles sideways.

Perhaps he had a star on the landing place for bathing.

The place I chose to land was a place where gravel accumulated on the riverside and became land.

It's a place that slowly deepens from the shore, so it's perfect for bathing.

The time is past 7 pm at dusk, the sun has already set, and the sky is beautifully dyed red.

The surface of the river also reflects the light and beautifully reflects the sunset sky and shines.

Staring contest with the eastern spot-Billed turtles

When we landed on the riverside, the spot-Billed turtles approached us.

"This is our territory, so don't do anything!"

But it seems that he came to protest.

The goshawk had been listening to the spot-Billed protest for a while,

"The river is here, so everyone should use it!"

I thought, "It's strange to claim the owner!", I ignored the spot-Billed turtle and slowly stepped into the river.

At first I started bathing carefully, my body seems to know how to bathe and moves freely

Even at dusk, it's still hot in the summer.

At first, I carefully chilled my stomach in a shallow place where my toes were soaked.

Then he repeatedly crouched and stood for a while.

The young bird felt the coldness and comfort of the water soaking for the first time, or immediately began to bathe by moving its feathers.

It seems that the body knows how to bathe, and the body seems to move freely.

Then, in a shallow place, it became unsatisfactory or gradually moved to a deeper place.

Boldly soak your head completely in the water and bathe

I gradually got used to the water and became bolder in bathing.

In the end, put your head in the water and say "Bashabasha!"

I think the cold water was more comfortable than I expected.

The spot-Billed turtles appeared again, and this time it seems that they came to see the situation, "Did you drown?"

The color and pattern of the feathers are similar, and since they came into the water, they thought, "Are you a friend of us?", And they seem to be drowning, so they seem to be a little worried.

After bathing, go to bed

After bathing with Bashabasha and Bashabasha for a while, my body got cold enough, the dirt was removed, and I was satisfied with it, so I went home to bed.

And from the next day onward, Kawabe also became a playground for three goshawk children.

The event at dusk on July 13th, when the cicadas squeal.
