"Urban goshawk, breeding record" 30, chasing after increasing intensity

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

"The story of a goshawk, a bird of prey that has advanced into the city Tokyo Japan"

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park in Tokyo from July 2017 to December 2018.

Chase after me! I'm a demon!

Last time, I talked about chasing after a crow.

This time, I will talk about the chasing after the brothers have become fierce.

By the time the evening sun set, a three-bird flight exercise and chasing were often held around the Otaka Forest.

The beginning is always graceful and slow.

It ’s not an evening walk, but today it ’s a flight with three brothers.

With my dad's evening prey, I was satisfied with the meal and all three were full.

"It's all over again today!", The brothers begin their graceful flight as usual.

On this day, all the brothers slowly flew around the forest.

However, the elegant and slow flight does not last so long, and the speed gradually increases.

Then, what escapes and what chases is completed, and usually progresses to playing tag.

This is also the usual thing.

Each young bird, who is improving his flying skills every day, proudly shows off his flight skills such as sudden turns, sudden descents, and sudden reversals, which he newly obtained, asking his brother, "Can you fly like this?" ..

That self-confidence gives one of the brothers a chance to escape, saying, "If you can escape from me, try to escape!"

And the chase begins as usual.

The eldest son who observes the other party well even if he is chasing

Chasing was started early after the young birds were able to fly.

At first, my ability to fly was immature, so it was a smile to see as if it were a flight exercise between brothers.

Through such chasing, three young birds that have improved their flight ability day by day, such as sudden descent, sharp turn, and rapid rise.

If it is already a single crow, its flight ability has improved so that it can be easily driven away.

The chase became even more intense as the young birds improved their flight abilities.

This chase, which was initially a flight exercise, has changed over time into a hunting exercise and an exercise to ward off enemies such as intruders.

Oni on the chasing side plays the role of a hunting goshawk, and chases the escaped one as a prey.

And the one who runs away becomes a prey and runs away franticly.

"If you get caught, you will be killed!"

The one who escapes repeats a sharp turn and a dive, and somehow tries to escape from Oni.

If Oni doesn't run away, he bites into his brother who desperately runs away.

By the time the chase reaches its climax, the chasing Oni seems to think that the opponent is not a brother but a prey.

After chasing the fleeing brother, Oni raised his claws from behind him and tried to hit him.

"Orya !!!!" "I was caught up!" "I can do it !!!"

When Oni catches up and looks back, the brothers who are imminent to hit behind!

It's not something I've had to eat like this.

The one who ran away turned around, saying, "I am! I !, your brother!" "I'm here, stop!"

It seems that the one who forgot about me and chased after me also woke up.

"Stop it! I'm here, I'm here!" "Oh, you were a smash man!"

A chase that was likened to hunting.

In the near future, the three young goshawks will have to hunt themselves, catch their prey and survive.

Through this chase

A hunting method that is absolutely necessary to live as a bird of prey,

And about how to escape from enemies such as crows, how to dodge and how to drive away

I was learning at the same time.

This chase was not just a play, but a rehearsal for living.

to be continued
