"Urban Goshawks, Breeding Records" 33, Aerial Feeding

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

"The story of a goshawk, a bird of prey that has advanced into the city Tokyo Japan"

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park in Tokyo from July 2017 to December 2018.

Prey is now delivered in the air

Until now, the prey brought by the parent bird (father bird) was placed on the branch of a tree in the Otaka forest.

That's because the chicks are still small and have been around since I was in the nest.

When the young birds were still in the nest with small chicks, the mother birds took the prey placed on the tree branches by the males and carried them to the nest.

Now, when the prey is carried by the father bird, the three young birds go to the branch where the prey is placed at a glance.

My brothers cling to their prey.

The battle for such prey became extremely fierce after mid-July.

My dad's birds have been gradually reducing the frequency of feeding recently, so all the brothers have been hungry lately.

The young birds escape or hide with their prey in order to get the declining prey.

Each of the three brothers squeezed out their wisdom and tried to eat as much food as possible.

Near the end of July, the way food was delivered to young parent birds also changed.

The situation is introduced below.

A young bird that was the first to find a father carrying prey

The eldest daughter who was watching over her father's return with one bird apart from her brother on the treetop.

First of all, I found my dad coming back!

Yelling, "Welcome back! I was prey!"

The eldest daughter said, "Give me a prey because I found it first!"

She appealed fiercely to get food directly from her dad.

Two of the late brothers follow.

It ’s a prey, who wants to eat it? You!

The parent bird seems to have decided to give her food to her eldest daughter, who is desperately appealing.

The young bird once passed the parent bird and went around to the lower rear.

The parent bird rises and slows down, and the young bird approaches from behind

The young bird rises from the lower rear and approaches the slowed-down father bird from behind.

The parent bird climbed and slowed down, and at the same time let go of its prey.

The parent bird ascended and let go of its prey

A form of throwing prey upwards.

The prey that was let go was just a little in the air, and the eldest daughter, who was waiting under her, received it firmly.

The parent bird confirmed that the child had firmly grabbed the food and slowly flew toward the lower reaches of the river.

thank you! Dad and the young bird that received the food

The young bird that received the food screamed loudly.

It seems that he says, "Thank you, Dad!"

Brothers approaching from behind!

The eldest daughter goes straight to the lower reaches of the river where her father flies.

She overtook her dad at a tremendous speed.

It is irresistible to be taken by my brothers for the prey I received!

The two brothers follow after that.

It seems that she has lost sight of her prey.

I'm sure it's this one, but where is it?

The eldest daughter disappeared into the forest on the downstream side.

I'm sure she's hiding and feeding somewhere in the foliage.

The one who was chasing her seems to have lost sight of her sister.

Once, I went down to the river near the forest where her sister disappeared.

The brothers waited for a while, but gave up and went back to the roost.

On the way back to the roost, I was concerned about the forest where my brothers seemed to be hiding.

On the electric wire near where things were happening, I saw my father.

Dad goshawk, it's as if he's done a job

The goshawk's dad was watching the children's prey exchanges from the top of the wire.

He feels relieved as if he has finished some work.

He's sure to see the brilliantly growing children and think, "I've done it!" "It's about time I let go!"

The caretaker has not seen the parent birds bring food at the end of the day.

to be continued

This is what happened on July 30th
