"Urban goshawks, breeding records" 9, Confirmation of nest performance by females

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

This blog introduces the life of a goshawk, a wild drama that unfolded in front of the caretaker in an urban park Tokyo Japana from July 2017 to December 2018.

Males who combine nest materials well to create stronger nests, 1st week of nest building

Nest construction work by males and transportation of nest materials have begun.

This time, it is a continuation of "Raptor, Goshawk, 8 living in the city" where the construction and remodeling of the nest started.

Nesting is proceeding smoothly due to the constant transportation of nesting materials and the efforts of males.

The initial stages of nest building, work, and transportation of nest materials were carried out exclusively by males.

The nest material was constantly carried for several hours every day, and the shape of the nest was completed day by day.

I'm impressed with how hard the male nests are made.

Anyway, I keep building nests with tremendous concentration.

I hear that last year's nest wasn't very good, probably because it's trying to build a stronger nest based on last year's lessons.

It can be seen that sometimes the branches are rearranged as shown in the above picture to create a more comfortable and stronger nest.

As the completion approached, the frequency of female visits increased.

When I feel the line of sight of the female, who is the on-site director, the male nesting becomes more and more enthusiastic.

Female watching male work from a distance

Perhaps the male will continue to carry the nest material until the female approves it.

Females are watching the male nesting from a distance, changing places from time to time.

It seems that the shape and workmanship of the nest are being confirmed from various directions.

For males, this female gaze will feel a lot of pressure.

Occasionally they squeal each other while the males are nesting. Twice

Females sometimes encourage males to say "Gun Valley!", While males seem to say "I'll do my best!".

or,

I wonder if the male is saying, "Isn't it okay to complete this?" And the female, "It's not good yet!"

The female headed to the nest to confirm the completion

The male stopped working, and after a while, the female headed for the nest.

She probably went to check the workmanship of the nest.

Is the nest completed?

Will the female admit it?

It is a moment of "harassment and excitement" for males.

Female confirms the workmanship of the nest for a while

The female entered the nest that the male had built over two weeks and confirmed the workmanship for a while.

The almost bare hanger is finished so that it can be hidden in a tree branch.

The female who went up to the nest stood on the nest for a while, as if she was meditating as she was spending time with her growing chicks.

She seems happy, screaming and showing no act of destroying the nest. After a while after she stopped her work, the female headed for the nest.

She probably went to check the workmanship of the nest.

A male watching anxiously while a female confirms the performance of the nest

The male watched the female checking the finished state of the nest from a nearby tree branch.

She looks very worried, "Are you okay?" She seems to be uncomfortable.

After two weeks of hard work, the male seems to have been quite sick. She probably reduced her diet and worked hard to build a nest. It seems that we need some rest.

From now on, after the chicks have hatched, the heavy labor of catching food, peeling their wings, and transporting them over and over again every day awaits.

The female satisfactorily took off from the nest, and it seems that the female "OK" came out.

The male was relieved and flew somewhere.

From now on, the work of finishing the nest with a scalpel will begin.

This blog is about January 20, 2018.
